J Kitchen Vegetarian Restaurant Chiang Mai

Described as serving the best vegetarian food in Chiang Mai on Trip Advisor, over 60% rate J Kitchen as “excellent” – 5 out of 5, and boasts only vegetarian food plus non-egg dishes. Located outside the old city in Chiang Mai business park, here we are treated with a special new dish yet to grace their menu – Riceberry fried rice with “herbs”!

Here at J kitchen, “we just put by Vieng Joom-On behind the name”, which is just a recognition for their customers that they have the same owner and service as their partner restaurant – “J Kitchen by Vieng Joom-On Teahouse“, Khun Ake the General Manager explains, a fuscia pink Lanna teak house nestled by the river Ping with a charming garden leading down to decking and a bar by the water.

Vieng which translates as city, Joom-On – color pink, then exchange adjective with noun, J Kitchen by “Pink City” is an influence from the days the owner spent in Jaipur.

Here they sell 500g packets of riceberry rice which is a new variety of rice now sold globally and is a cross pollination of 3 types of Thai rice:

1. Thai Hom Mali Rice
2. Hom Nin Rice
3. Khao Dawk Mali 105

Riceberry rice is farmed in Thailand, costs just 70 baht from J Kitchen and will serve 8 to 9 dishes depending on your appetite.

Riceberry rice is sold at various online outlets, including Amazon ($40) but is a fraction of the price at say thenaturalhealthmarket.co.uk at just £3.99 in the UK, so have a hunt around online or at your local stores to pick it up at a respectable exchange rate.

Riceberry rice is high in fiber and bran oil, antioxidant rich, plentiful in minerals and vitamins and is graded as a low-medium in the glycemic index.

As it’s royal dark purple intensifies with maturity, so does its nutritional content plus it’s quite a unique dish to serve to guests.

Cross pollinated from Thai Hom Mali Rice – aka jasmine rice, the most sought after of rices, Hom Nin Rice – renowned for its antioxidant benefits and Khao Dawk Mali 105 – a hardy agriculturally bred seed, this 3-way cross pollination contains significant quantities of:

Gama Oryzanol
Vitamin E
Beta-carotene
Folic Acid
Bran Oil
Tannin
Zinc
Fiber

Important note: In order to boil riceberry rice correctly, you will need to soak 500g in water (if you are preparing for 8) for 30 minutes and then drain the rice and place in a saucepan full of 800ml of water and boil for 1hr 30mins.
